FAQ for visitors

  • What is your denomination?

The United Church of Christ is “A Church of Extravagant Welcome, Seeking a Just and Peaceful World” Click here to learn more.

  • What is your mission?

Journeying together toward deeper faith, justice, and love for all. On Sunday mornings our ministers typically welcome everyone by saying:

St. Paul’s UCC has been worshiping as a community of faith in the city of St. Paul for over 140 years. We are a progressive, Open and Affirming, Creation Justice congregation journeying together to deepen our faith, seek justice for all, and share God’s unconditional love with the world. St. Paul’s UCC believes Black Lives Matter, and we do acknowledge that we sit on Dakota Land.

  • Where do I park when visiting St. Paul’s UCC?

The parking lot in the back of the church, off of Milton, is used for parking most often. Though you can also use street parking on Summit Avenue and Milton Avenue, as well.

  • Where do I enter the building?

On Sundays you can enter using either the Summit Avenue doors or the back main entrance facing the parking lot off of Milton. On weekdays, use the back main entrance and press the call button on the wall to be let in.

  • What do people wear to church at St. Paul’s UCC?

Whatever you are most comfortable in. We never want dress to be a barrier and have no dress code. Our congregation usually is in casual or business casual clothing. We welcome you to come as you are.

  • How can I get to know people at St. Paul’s?

Our Friendship Hour takes place after worship on Sunday mornings in the Narthex. This is a great time to have coffee/tea and some snacks with fellow attendees and members. We also have programming on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Check out our events page for more details.

  • How do I attend worship online on Sundays?

Join us online via the livestream or Facebook at 10:30 am. For this Sunday’s Bulletin click here (it gets updated the Friday before).

  • I am interested in becoming a member. How do I take the first step?

If you have been attending church for one Sunday or one year, if you know you are ready to join or are still on the fence, you are welcome to join our quarterly New Member Class. We'll explore what it means to be UCC, what it means to be part of SPUCC, and most importantly, we'll learn a bit about each other's faith journeys. Reach out to Rev. Eli’jah Carroll to sign up.

  • What is your COVID policy?

St. Paul’s United Church of Christ is a mask-optional space, unless you are an unvaccinated individual, then we do ask you to mask. Masks are provided by the back door. There is a marked spot in the sanctuary for those who wish to remain masked and be close to others who are doing so. We ask that if you do not feel well or if you have had a close COVID exposure in the last five days to please stay home.

  • What does it mean to be an “Open and Affirming” church?

We affirm the full inclusion of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and non-binary persons (LGBTQ+) in the church's life and ministry. Click here to learn more.

  • Does my child need to be signed up/registered to attend Sunday School?

Absolutely not! If you decide to come back please do register your child though, so that we can get them on the attendance list. All of our Sunday School teachers are background checked, so you can feel comfortable sending them their first time.

  • Can I go to Sunday school with my child? It's their first time and they are scared.

We want your children to be comfortable in Sunday school. If there is hesitation, please do bring them to the space before worship starts to show them where they will be. You can also talk to Rev. Eli'jah to set up a walk through. We offer a milestone at the beginning of each program year that readies new children to Sunday school, to be prepared for what to expect.

  • Do you offer childcare during worship?

We do! You can find our nursery just down the hall from the office, just past the bathrooms. We employ childcare staff who are experienced and background checked, who help care for children 0-6 years old during worship.

  • Can I rent space at St. Paul’s UCC?

We do rent space on a case by case basis and love our building to be used for the greater good. Email our Business and Facilities Manager to learn more and submit your inquiry.

  • How do I stay up to date on church news and events?

The best way to stay up to date is to subscribe to the “This Week at SPUCC” email that gets sent on Tuesdays. The Eblast for parents, caregivers and Sunday School teachers is sent on Thursdays each week. Email Jennifer Harris, our Communications Coordinator, at jennifer@spucconsummit.org to subscribe.
