A Local and Earthwise Thanksgiving: Tips for Turkeys and Vegetarian Delights
from your Earthwise/Creation Justice Committee
The Earthwise/Creation Justice team is here to help make your Thanksgiving the best-ever with ideas to pick up a locally raised turkey, and wonderful vegetarian recipes to serve at your gathering.
The Mississippi Market Coop allows you to pre-order two types of locally raised turkeys. You can preorder a fresh turkey from Ferndale Market in Cannon Falls (at $2.79 per lb.) or a locally raised organic frozen turkey from Schultz Organic Farm in Owatonna (at $3.99 per lb.). Turkey preorders can be placed through Nov. 20. The Coop also has local frozen turkeys available from Ferndale Market for purchase in the store.
Another option is to check out the Farm Direct Minnesota site on Facebook. This is a public site where farmers offer their livestock and produce for sale. Search for turkey there (be sure to choose ‘most recent’) and you will find many options. Remember also that the St Paul Farmer’s Market is open all winter on weekends at 308 Prince St, and farmers will be there selling their local turkeys.
And, to make your meal even better, you can help the earth by eating less meat. For this holiday season we are again sharing our community cookbook of vegetarian recipes for your holiday gatherings.Visit https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1jZhy9DNkoqhx15Sy1t4GGYBGi8fg5v3k?usp=sharing to see recipes already shared or to add your own. To add a recipe, you can create a google doc document with your recipe, attach a pdf, or take a picture of a recipe from your recipe book at home and drop it there.
