A Living Tradition: Celebrating Black Music

February is Black History Month, and SPUCC is proud to honor the many important contributions of African-Americans to our musical tradition. We acknowledge the deep ongoing struggle for dignity and equality in the African-American community, beautifully expressed through music with deep understanding of the teachings of Jesus. From spirituals and gospel hymns to modern compositions, we regularly incorporate music from the African-American community throughout the year. A particular effort is made to support the work of living Black composers such as Victor C. Johnson, Ysaye Barnwell, Mark A. Miller, Melanie DeMore, Marques Garret, and many others. Much of this contemporary music is not immediately recognizable as coming from the Black tradition, so you may be hearing music from Black or other under-represented composers on any given Sunday without even realizing it.
